Paragon Skills for Industry are now offering a new qualification – ‘Barista’, working in partnership with Café Rico in Weymouth.
The course is ideally suited to businesses that have a coffee machine and those who are looking to maximise its potential.
The course will develop product knowledge, preparation and presentation skills of beverages and how to work the equipment safely and effectively. Delegates will be expected to produce a range of drinks, learn about the ingredients that produce the drinks and demonstrate how they calibrate, use and maintain the equipment. In addition, delegates are expected to understand the importance of customer service.
The award is divided into four areas: demonstrating product knowledge, clean and check equipment, display drink building techniques and serve customers. Delegates will be assessed through a practical task that will take approximately thirty minutes. They will be required to calibrate a coffee grinder and make up a variety of drinks including: espresso, cappuccino, caffe latte, filter coffee, tea, hot chocolate and smoothies.
The assessment will conclude with twenty short questions to assess delegate knowledge. However, no time limit is set for these questions.
It is expected that those delegates new to making espresso based drinks spend time outside the twenty guided learning hours to practice their new skills under supervision.
The course will be offered at Café Rico, Oxford Court, Granby Industrial Estate, Weymouth on the following dates: ??? The course will cost £???? per delegate. There are only eight places available on each course – so reserve your place as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.

EndsWords to Editors:
The literal translation of “barista” from the Italian is “bartender”, but as it is the Italian bartenders who are experts on the espresso machine the term is now used to describe an expert in espresso-based drinks.
