Carl Selby at the Pines Residential Care Home
A Senior Care Assistant, Carl has now completed an NVQ Level 2
Carl Selby is a Senior Care Assistant. He has completed an Apprenticeship, including NVQ Level 2, in Care, and is now working towards an NVQ Level 3 in Promoting Independence.
Carl works at The Pines Residential Care Home in Bournemouth, which is a home for adults with learning difficulties. As well as the day-to-day caring of the residents, Carl is responsible for the cleanliness of the home and for supervising more junior members of staff.
He believes that the work-based route to learning has enabled him to gain a wide range of skills. He says: “After completing my Apprenticeship I was keen to gain a higher level qualification. This has paid off as I was promoted to a supervisory capacity whilst undertaking my Level 3 NVQ.”
“Learning on the job has enabled me to learn basic skills for the industry such as handling medication and food hygiene. However I have also been able to really improve my communication with the residents. As my role has changed to Senior Care Assistant I’ve also had to make things like time management and organisational skills more of a priority.”
Sarah Dixon is the Manager of The Pines. She is really pleased with how Carl has progressed and thinks that he has become an invaluable member of staff.
She says: “It is excellent to have the enthusiasm of somebody who is gaining qualifications whilst working. I have real confidence in Carl, as I know that he is broadening his knowledge in the job. Paragon support Carl a lot in his qualifications and so my resources are less stretched.”
Mrs Dixon added that the qualifications are vital for the home to stay in line with regulatory standards. “We have chosen the modules for the NVQ to fit in with the Commission for Social Care Inspection, so, as well as Carl gaining qualifications, The Pines has evidence of its high standards.”
Carl is keen to progress once he has completed his Level 3 NVQ. “I have been looking into doing an NVQ at Level 5 in Care Management . There are so many opportunities, I would definitely recommend doing an Apprenticeship if you want to work in the care sector.”
