Inspiring people to succeed.

Take us back to the beginning of your career, what Apprenticeship route did you take and why?  I decided straight from school (2005) that I wanted to work within automotive industry and after two weeks from leaving school aged 16 I started an Apprenticeship with leading truck manufacturer DAF Trucks.  Having never been alone and away from my hometown in Bournemouth, I felt very out of my comfort zone travelling to and residing in Bristol every 6 weeks, and at the same time, so very excited about my journey ahead.

“I quickly developed my independence, confidence and life skills. Being thrown in at the deep end and mixing with likeminded people, all with a passion for automotive was truly amazing!”

PARAGON SKILLS

What level of Apprenticeship did you achieve and how long did it take?  I reached Level 4 in Motor Vehicle Maintenance and repair including a HGV technical certificate within 4 years.

Tell us about your role once you completed your Apprenticeship?  As soon as finished my Level 4 in 2009 I secured a position working for a major national food producer as a HGV Mechanic.  During my 7 years there, I had aspirations to achieve a HGV driving licence and because of my work ethic and positive attitude I was fortunate that the company supported me in achieving my licence.  This gave me the freedom and the opportunity to work outside of workshop giving me much more independence and a broader experience.”

What made you consider applying for your current tutor role at Paragon Skills?  “I had reached the top of my career ladder in my field and began to look for my next challenge.  I thought back to what I’d enjoyed most about my journey to date and remembered fondly my time at college.  Chatting with a friend who works for Paragon Skills I found out about an automotive tutor role and applied…. and the rest is history!  I’ve been working with Paragon now for 12 months and have enjoyed every moment!”

What do you love about your job?  “I love the fact that I can share my passion and knowledge of automotive with other people.  As I am one of the youngest in the tutor team, I find I can easily relate to the younger students.  It’s so rewarding and a joy to energise our learners and help them achieve their qualifications.”

What are your career and training plans for the future?  “I plan to continue to climb the career ladder.  Within a year I’ve also become a qualified assessor and I’m training towards becoming a qualified teacher and hope to continue working for Paragon Skills.  I genuinely feel that Paragon has a great future ahead and I’d like to be part of that.”

What would you say to someone considering taking up an Apprenticeship?  “You’ve got to be brave and put yourself out there.  Training through the Apprenticeship has given me this confidence and discipline to be the best I can.”

What would you say to someone considering an Apprenticeship with Paragon Skills?   “Because of the small groups you can guarantee that you will get personal one to one support.  Our campus in Bournemouth is excellent with great facilities and masses of knowledge within tutor team.  A fantastic place to start your career and education in automotive.”
