Paragon Skills are leading the way with the NEW City & Guilds 2473 Boatbuilding Standards Diploma
21 April 2017
Our well-established and dedicated Marine Training Centre in Fareham is the first to offer this Diploma which is designed to develop the professional standards of the nation’s boat builders.
Paragon Skills is currently the only approved centre in the UK delivering the new apprenticeship programme and qualifications, and offers a unique opportunity nationally for block-release learning, but also training and delivery tailored to suit the business needs.
Apprentices undertake two qualifications that have been designed to meet the requirements of the standard and contain a robust competency assessment together with an in-depth assessment of knowledge.
The apprenticeship will typically take 48 months, with the end point assessment taken during the final three to six months.
What will be covered in the off-the-job training?
Introduction to the marine industry: This mandatory unit is concerned with safety awareness and the communication skills needed to work effectively in the marine industry.
Principles of boatbuilding technology: This mandatory unit is concerned with the selection and use of materials, tools and equipment.
Business improvement techniques: This unit aims to provide the learner with the knowledge of lean business process and quality improvement.
Yacht and boatbuilding assembly and sub-assembly: This optional unit is concerned with yacht and boatbuilding assembly and sub assembly.
FRP manufacture for marine construction: This unit is about the requirements for successful production of components in composite materials related to marine construction.
In addition to delivering the training, our very experienced instructors and assessors can also help employers with:
1. Possible financial support
2. Recruitment and selection of apprentices
3. Induction programmes in the workplace
4. Assessment and reviewing of the apprentice’s progress
5. Preparation for the end point assessments
We’ll also help apprentices to achieve Functional Skills in Maths, English (dependent on their GCSE grades) if they require these qualifications.
Working in conjunction with The Worshipful Company of Shipwrights
The scheme encourages small businesses in the marine sector to train apprentices based on the founding principles of the Shipwrights Company. The Scheme provides first year funding for the SME by way of a bursary or loan to overcome the negative cash impact of taking on an apprentice and also provides invaluable support. Further questions can be directed to firstname.lastname@example.org or on 01784 223617.
During their time as apprentices, there are possibilities to get involved with special projects whereby valuable practical skills are learnt. Just recently at the Fareham Campus, the Boatbuilding Apprentices completely restored the Porchester Sea Scout's old lugger as a volunteer project. The scouts got their boat back in gleaming condition after the learners stripped, cleaned, sanded, painted and varnished her.
Paragon Skills Marine Training Centre has been working with leading Marine employers for many years including: Elephant Boat Yard, Hayling Yacht Company, Wytchcraft, Sirius Marine and The Rib Shop.
Whether you currently have an employee eligible for an apprenticeship, or are seeking an apprentice, we will be happy to help you.
