Paragon Skills Host Semi-Final Of 2017 Top Technician Competition

On May 11th 2017 we were fortunate enough to host the Top Technician competition again with Aftermarket Magazine at our Bournemouth Automotive Training Centre. The Top Technician Competition has been running since 2002 and the semi-finals have been hosted by us for the last 2 years. The competition is sponsored by us and a number of other companies including Snap-on, Ring, RMI and is one of the Automotive Industry's most prestigious events.

About the competition

It all starts online; there are three online tests that get progressively more difficult as they go on. The first online test filtered out 250 candidates, who then went on to complete the second online exam, which then filtered down further to the top 100. Finally, the last exam filters out 30 candidates whose tests are then examined again by the judges who handpick the 10 semi-finalists to compete in a hands on competition here at Paragon.

So, what happens at the Semi-Finals

On May 11th for the semi-finals, the 10 chosen semi-finalists competed against each other against the clock and under strict judged conditions to earn their place in the Finals, which were held at the RMI Academy on the 13th of July.

How do the semi-finals work?

The competition is staged in two parts with 5 of the competitors in the morning and 5 in the afternoon. There are 5 cars in the workshop, each with an individual issue that the competition entrants have to find and fix against the clock in 20 minutes before they move onto the next car. Whilst they do have a 10-minute break in-between the 5 x 20 minute competition bouts, it is a very intense atmosphere with huge pressure on the technician to find and fix a complex fault in a relatively short period of time.

How do the finals work?

The Final works similarly to how the semi-finals work. After the semi-finals, the judges will choose 5 participants to go through to the final round where they will complete 5 x 50 minute tasks that are even more daunting than the tasks in the semi final.

It's a real pleasure to be able to host Top Technician again especially on the fifteenth anniversary of this important event. It is nice that a training provider has been given the opportunity to be involved with mainstream industry, roll on July and the finals and good luck to all that make it through.
