Find out why you should take a career in the childcare sector

Childcare career opportunities are on the increase, and at Paragon Skills we have been delivering Childcare Apprenticeships for 20 years so we know! We help hundreds of learners every year to achieve their childcare career ambitions.

As more and more parents work part or full-time, the requirement for childcare services increases according to the Office for National Statistics. The number of mothers with dependent children employed in England has surged by more than a million over the past two decades. This is why there are more career opportunities to work in childcare.

Working with children is fulfilling

If you decide to take a career in the childcare sector you get to help develop children’s minds in order to prepare for the future, what a privilege! These are the formative years of development and as a childcare worker, you will play a big part in their development.  Being a good teacher involves building confidence in children, and making learning fun for them! A good learning experience when they’re young influences how they respond to education the whole rest of their lives. You’ll literally be changing people’s lives!

The joy of working with the kids

There’s nothing better than seeing children’s faces light up each time they learn something. It brings endless joy! Also, because you’re spending so much time with the children it allows you to experience the child’s transformation first hand. You can also learn skills from them. For example, you’ll find that you’ll be great at explaining, simplifying, and expanding on subjects, and you will become a lot more patient as a result of your experience of working with children. All of these are great skills to possess! Also, if you can work with children, you can work with anyone.

Flexible working hours

This is definitely one of the main reasons why people choose a career in childcare, especially those who have children of their own but want to earn some extra income for their families. It allows people to choose when they work according to their chosen position and time slots available. So any working parents can often fit a part-time childcare role such as a nursery nurse, or playschool assistant in around their own childcare responsibilities as a parent.

Plenty of career opportunities

Since the demand for trained childcare workers is increasing, the choice of career paths and the volume of job opportunities available are plentiful. Childcare workers are always in high demand. And since childcare workers are now required to complete specific certifications and diplomas to take care of children, it’s a perfect time for you to get qualified in childcare. There are many different job roles and job opportunities that you can progress to after you have qualified such as a Nursery Nurse/Supervisor, Senior Playworker or a Family Support Worker.

Kelly Ellis – 28-year-old Kelly began her career in retail straight from school. She really enjoyed the customer-facing elements of her roles. One of Kelly’s managers suggested that maybe she’d like to consider training in childcare as she saw great potential in her.  After researching this idea, and being denied a place at University, Kelly opted for the Apprenticeship route. With Paragon Skills help, Kelly began a Level 2 in Children and Young People’s Workforce in October 2015, working for the Treetops Nursery in Dudley. She has now completed her Level 3 and is a qualified Nursery Nurse.

Bethany Cole - Bethany Cole fell pregnant in her 6th form and her career plans had to take a change of direction. She had hoped to study midwifery at university but ended up attending a Health and Social Care course at Newbury College. Talking to a friend, she heard it was possible to work in a nursery as an Apprentice, earn money and train in childcare whilst on the job! Paragon Skills helped Bethany find a job at Jubilee Day Nursery where she could study her level 2 in Childcare alongside working, the perfect solution for new mum aged 19 and now with a one-year-old.

Agata Kwiatkowska - Being a nursery assistant amongst a team of highly qualified childcare professionals, all of whom had completed their level 2 and 3 certificates in CYPW (Children’s and Young People’s Workforce), motivated Agata to improve herself further. She wanted a qualification that was flexible enough to fit into her existing schedule but would also help her reach her goal of improving future career prospects. With a Paragon Skills level 2 Apprenticeship in Childcare, Agata was able to continue working for her employer whilst learning new skills and even forging stronger working relationships within her setting.
