Our training, your way

Following their promise in the October 2018 Budget, the Government has now agreed that SMEs must now only contribute 5% to Apprenticeship training (instead of the previous 10%), as part of a “£695 million package to support apprenticeships” (Philip Hammond, Chancellor of the Exchequer).

This is very exciting news for SMEs and will be a welcome solution to those who were unable to take on an apprentice due to the high initial investment. This change opens doors to smaller businesses to invest in training their existing staff or bring on new talent into their business. The difference this can make to businesses is huge, especially in sectors where courses are highly technical and are therefore a large cost to a business.

For example, a three year Marine Engineering course which costs £27,000 would cost a small business just £1,350 to upskill an existing team member or to grow their team, actively increasing their output as a business and delivering exceptional return on investment.

Again in Hairdressing where a course can cost £7,000, salons will only need to pay a 5% contribution of £350 in course costs to train a new member of staff making it much more viable to grow the team, as once the Apprentice is trained, they will be able to cover the course cost and the cost of their chair within a few weeks.

The Government recognises that smaller employers have historically played a very important role in helping young people into the workforce for the first time and this change in rules shows their continued commitment to the cause.

If your business is looking to take on an Apprentice, upskill existing staff through Apprenticeship training or you’d like some advice on how Apprenticeships can benefit your business, call Paragon Skills on 0800 783 2545 or email enquiries@pgon.co.uk.

Further information and Course costs

SME’s with under 50 employees
If you are a small business with under 50 employees and are looking to employ a 16-18 year old, the rule remains that there is no co-investment required as the Government covers the funding of the course for these individuals (as well as for those who are 19 – 24 years old on an LEA Health and Care plan).

Apprentices and employment rights

The Apprentices you take on will become your employees and are therefore entitled to the same treatment as your existing employees including the necessary induction into your organisation, and you will need to pay them the minimum wage. For your employees who are looking to take on an Apprenticeship course, there are no changes to their employment contract with you, and they will continue to complete their day to day job alongside the course that is complementary to their responsibilities.
