The Government is looking at reforms for functional skills which come into play on 1st September 2019. The reform process will ensure that these qualifications better meet your needs as an employer in terms of the knowledge and skills your apprentices achieve.

A discussion around functional skills can be tricky with your existing team members as it may bring up bad or embarrassing memories of being unable or unprepared to complete certain courses at school. However, this doesn’t have to be a negative conversation. These skills can be picked up over time, and functional skills training is simply a way to qualify that these skills exist within each team member and teach them the skills if they are not present. Just imagine your team members realising their potential in a subject like maths, year after they wrote it off as something they are ‘just not good at’!
You can turn this into a positive conversation and highlight the benefits they will receive as a result, and the possible impact it will make to their prospects moving forward. You can highlight that they will be able to develop and complete this learning within their role and at their pace, and as this training is applied in practical ways, they should find this information easier to retain than in previous attempts.
