Making your mark and build their confidence with Functional Skills training
With the next generation of school leavers bringing fresh talent into the market you may need to start thinking about the importance of functional skills. School leavers are new to the world of work and eager to get started and put their new bright ideas into practice, but may lack some of the academic GCSE grades to make their first step in their careers.
The beauty of apprenticeships is that they not only give your business the chance to offer guidance to staff looking to develop within their role but also to new staff looking for a way to gain the skills needed to work within your business. Functional skills can run alongside apprenticeship programmes allowing those who may have struggled at school with certain key skills will be supported through to the completion of their programme. Supporting your teams in this way makes your business stand out as someone who is committed to your team’s development both in the short and long term.
So what are functional skills?
Functional Skills are the essential skills in English, Maths and ICT which your teams need for success in both their personal and working lives. These skills can be studied standalone or as part of apprenticeship programmes, and are taught in practical ways helping learners apply these core skills to real-life situations. The Government is looking at reforms for functional skills which come into play on 1st September 2019. The reform process will ensure that these qualifications better meet your needs as an employer in terms of the knowledge and skills your apprentices achieve.
How can you make an impact on your team through functional skills training?
A discussion around functional skills can be tricky with your existing team members as it may bring up bad or embarrassing memories of being unable or unprepared to complete certain courses at school. However, this doesn’t have to be a negative conversation. These skills can be picked up over time, and functional skills training is simply a way to qualify that these skills exist within each team member and teach them the skills if they are not present. Just imagine your team members realising their potential in a subject like maths, year after they wrote it off as something they are ‘just not good at’!
You can turn this into a positive conversation and highlight the benefits they will receive as a result, and the possible impact it will make to their prospects moving forward. You can highlight that they will be able to develop and complete this learning within their role and at their pace, and as this training is applied in practical ways, they should find this information easier to retain than in previous attempts.
