Beyond the Classroom: Redefining learning with a balanced, dynamic approach

The 70:20:10 learning model has increasingly gained attention as an effective training approach that blends formal learning, social learning, and experiential learning. This model, backed by research and learning experts, offers an alternative approach to learning that mirrors the natural way humans acquire and retain knowledge and skills.

As a dedicated apprenticeship training provider, our mission is to equip aspiring professionals with the skills, knowledge, and experience they need to thrive in their chosen careers. Apprenticeships focus on learning on the job while working towards a qualification; through providing learners with high-quality apprenticeship delivery, we understand the significance of blending formal learning, hands-on experiences, and collaborative learning and feedback. We are constantly looking to embrace innovative learning models that go beyond traditional classroom education – such as the 70:20:10 learning model which has proven its effectiveness and is in our view akin to the typical apprenticeship training structure.

At its core, the 70:20:10 learning model emphasises a balanced learning approach that acknowledges three key aspects of knowledge acquisition and skill enhancement:

  1. 70% Experiential Learning: As an apprenticeship training provider, we recognise that hands-on experience is the cornerstone of skill development. Around 70% of learning occurs through practical application, allowing apprentices to directly engage with real-world tasks, challenges, and scenarios that mirror their future roles.
  2. 20% Social Learning: Collaboration, mentorship, and peer-to-peer interaction are pivotal in an apprentice’s journey. The 20% social learning component encourages apprentices to learn from mentors, colleagues, and fellow apprentices, facilitating the exchange of insights and perspectives.
  3. 10% Formal Learning: While experiential and social learning is paramount, formal education still holds its place. Approximately 10% of learning involves structured classroom sessions, workshops, 121 tutor-led sessions, and courses that provide essential theoretical foundations to complement practical experiences.

The benefits of integrating 70:20:10 into apprenticeship training:

Relevance to Real-World Scenarios: The majority of learning happening through experiential means ensures that apprentices gain skills directly applicable to their future careers. This relevancy accelerates the transition from learning to implementation.

Nurturing Apprenticeship Communities: The social learning aspect fosters a sense of belonging and community among apprentices. Sharing experiences, challenges, and successes creates a supportive environment that boosts confidence and growth.

Soft Skill Enhancement: Learners not only acquire technical skills but also develop crucial soft skills like communication, teamwork, and problem-solving through experiential and social learning.

Adaptability to Industry Changes: The 70:20:10 model inherently promotes adaptability, a vital trait in a constantly evolving job market. Apprentices learn to navigate change and innovation through hands-on experiences.

Implementing the 70:20:10 Learning Model:

Encourage informal learning spaces: Create platforms for employees or learners to interact, share experiences, and learn from each other. This could be through discussion forums, social media groups, or regular team meetings.

Provide constructive feedback: Constructive feedback is a crucial element of the social learning aspect. Encourage mentors and peers to provide feedback that highlights both strengths and areas for improvement.

Design experiential learning opportunities: Structure roles and projects that allow individuals to take on challenges and learn through hands-on experiences. Encourage experimentation and provide a safe space for failure.

Balanced curriculum: When designing formal training, strike a balance between theoretical knowledge and practical application. Incorporate case studies, simulations, and real-life examples to bridge the gap between theory and practice.

As an apprenticeship training provider, we are dedicated to nurturing not just skilled professionals, but well-rounded individuals ready to contribute meaningfully to their industries. By embracing experiential learning, social collaboration, and formal education, we are shaping the workforce of the future and strive to elevate apprenticeship training to new heights, to deliver an outstanding teaching and learning experience to every learner, every time.
