Lead Practitioner in Adult Care Level 4 apprentice, Voyage Care

Christopher Clarke works as a Senior Support Worker at Voyage Care, where he has built a ten year career defined by compassion, commitment and a genuine desire to support others. Alongside his role, he has successfully completed several apprenticeships, progressing through his Level 2, Level 3 and Level 4, using each stage of his apprenticeship journey to strengthen his skills and confidence.

Christopher first discovered his passion for care at 16 while training in a residential home. Even after exploring different jobs in early adulthood, he always returned to roles that allowed him to make a difference. Volunteering at a youth centre strengthened his desire to help people grow in confidence and independence, eventually leading him back into the care sector and then to The Rivers, where he has remained ever since.

His progression from Support Worker to Senior Support Worker came through determination and strong encouragement from his team. Voyage Care recognised his potential early on, offering opportunities to develop and grow into leadership responsibilities. Christopher’s approach is rooted in leading by example, giving his best and helping colleagues build confidence through learning and practice. He continues to support both new and experienced staff while remaining hands on in delivering high quality care.

I believe apprenticeships offer an excellent opportunity for individuals who want to improve themselves and gain new skills while continuing to work. They allow you to learn while you work, applying the skills and knowledge directly in your role. Qualifications that once felt out of reach become attainable as you balance work and study, helping you progress to a position you can genuinely feel proud of.

Christopher’s thoughts on apprenticeships

Apprenticeships have had a transformative impact on Christopher’s confidence, career and outlook. Leaving school without qualifications had affected his belief in his own ability to learn, but the structure and support of an apprenticeship offered him a route that felt achievable and motivating. Completing his Level 2 diploma rebuilt his confidence, and progressing to Level 3 and Level 4 gave him the chance to stretch his skills further. Achieving a distinction at Level 3 became a personal milestone.

Throughout his journey, Christopher valued the chance to develop new responsibilities that helped him grow as a senior member of staff. From conducting appraisals to leading meetings and delivering extended presentations, each new experience helped him build confidence and discover the satisfaction of stepping outside his comfort zone.

Both Voyage Care and Paragon Skills played a central role in supporting Christopher’s development. His team provided encouragement, guidance and flexibility during challenging periods at work, while his personal tutor at Paragon Skills, offered consistent understanding and support. Having worked with Christopher during his Level 3, she developed a clear understanding of how he worked best and used this to support him throughout Level 4, particularly during times of personal difficulty. This combined support network helped him stay motivated and confident at every stage.

Looking to the future, Christopher hopes to continue progressing, either by moving into a deputy manager role within Voyage Care or by working with young adults in an educational or care setting. His goal is to keep developing as a leader and continue making a difference in the lives of the people he supports. Above all, his apprenticeship journey has given him long lasting confidence in his abilities and the belief that with determination and support, he can achieve whatever he sets his mind to.
