Ebony Sargent

Business Administration Level 3 Apprentice, Action for Children

Ebony is currently working as a Business Support Officer for Action for Children, having completed her Level 3 Business Administration apprenticeship. Ebony began her role with Action for Children in 2021; thinking about her career options, Ebony decided that she wanted to make a change and advance in her career. Ebony started with a range of transferrable skills, including interpersonal communication, organisational and time-management skills. Therefore, when a Business Support position became available, she felt that it was a perfect opportunity to use these skills on a daily basis.

Prior to joining Action for Children, Ebony did not have any experience within the Administrative Sector. Her manager at Action for Children offered the opportunity to complete a Business Administration Diploma alongside her working role. Ebony explained that she saw this as a fantastic opportunity to gain more experience and expand her knowledge regarding the industry, to further support her team.

During her apprenticeship, Ebony had a strong desire to produce the absolute best work possible, asking questions and positively contributing to discussion in group sessions ensuring that she completely understood what was being asked of her.  She took on board feedback and produced an outstanding showcase portfolio for end point assessment. Ebony flew through End Point Assessment, receiving a distinction overall.

My apprenticeship training has been invaluable in building my confidence in an industry that I had no prior experience in, and I am so grateful to have been offered the opportunity.

Ebony’s thoughts on her apprenticeship

There are so many advantages to completing an apprenticeship, to be able to gain a qualification and experience whilst working within the industry and earning a living is a great opportunity and I would recommend an apprenticeship to anyone considering it. Not only can apprenticeships improve your employability, but they also offer you the chance to upskill yourself and can lead you to progression within your career.

I had a fantastic support system behind me whilst completing my apprenticeship. I had constant support and guidance from my manager and personal tutor from the beginning. I had regular communication, feedback, and review meetings, which assisted my development throughout the course. My manager allowed me to have protected time in the week to complete assignments without interruptions, which helped to manage my stress levels immensely!

Ebony was promoted in August 2022 and now fully supports the Targeted and Specialist elements of the service ensuring that their Youth Work, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Counselling referrals and triaging processes run smoothly, as well as supporting some of the financial aspects of the service. She has recently been accepted onto the Business Support Development Programme within Action for Children, which she will be starting soon. She hopes that this programme will teach her more about the role and operational aspects of being a Senior Business Support Officer and educate her on how to manage a team and financial management. Ebony is excited to see where this new programme will take her on her career journey.
