Laura Lockett

Lead Practitioner in Adult Care apprentice, Voyage Care

Laura’s career in care began in 2011, when a role as a financial administrator came to an end after the company went into administration. Seizing the opportunity to retrain, she applied for an apprenticeship and discovered a career in adult care that she genuinely enjoyed. Over the years, Laura steadily progressed; from apprentice to full-time Support Worker, then Team Leader, Senior, and, in October 2024, Registered Manager, completing her CQC registration along the way. Today, she leads a residential service at Voyage Care while continuing her professional development through a Level 4 apprenticeship, having previously completed Levels 2 and 3 and recently enrolling on the Leader in Adult Care Level 5 apprenticeship. Her approach to work is grounded in continuous improvement: there is always room to grow, develop, and excel, a mindset that has shaped her career and the quality of care she champions.

What began as ‘just a job’ became a career I love. Over the years I have progressed from an apprentice to full‑time support worker, team leader to senior. There is always room to grow, and apprenticeships are an amazing way to support professional development.

Laura’s thoughts on apprenticeships

For Laura, apprenticeships are an amazing route to professional growth; clear, realistic, and structured with achievable goals. That clarity has translated into confidence and momentum in her leadership role, reinforcing the skills she uses day-to-day as a Registered Manager. A key part of that experience has been consistency and support; her personal tutor at Paragon Skills has been a familiar and trusted presence since her Level 2, through to Level 4, offering steady guidance that’s helped Laura keep building at each stage. Voyage Care has complemented that learning, as a leading apprenticeship employer in the care sector, with the practical space and encouragement to succeed. Time set aside for study, coaching, and additional training, so development is always embedded into her learning and work, not an add‑on.

Looking ahead, Laura is focused on completing her Level 5 and using that advanced knowledge to drive service improvement. Her immediate goal is clear: move the residential service rating from Requires Improvement to Good, strengthening quality and outcomes for the people she supports. With a proven track record of progression and a growth mindset, she’s turning apprenticeship learning into lasting impact for her team and her service. Laura’s career progression demonstrates the power of skilled, confident leaders in care; driving better practice, stronger teams, and ultimately, better lives for the people we support, and shaping the future of care.
