Niaill Watmore

Children, Young People and Families Practitioner Level 4 Apprentice, Action for Children

Niaill works as a therapeutic residential worker with Action for Children, having just completed his Level 4 Children, Young People and Families Practitioner apprenticeship early and is now looking to continue his learning through the Level 5 apprenticeship. Action for Children is a children’s charity in the UK; dedicated to supporting and safeguarding children and young individuals, striving to do everything in the interest of the children in their care. One of the ways they support young people is by offering nurturing environments in small residential homes, located in local communities.

As a therapeutic residential worker, Niaill’s role as a therapeutic residential worker is to ensure that tailored, trauma-informed support is provided for each child. This trauma-informed approach recognises and responds to the impact of trauma on the lives of young people, shaping every aspect of care. Focusing not only on the immediate needs of children in his care, but on creating an environment that empowers them to thrive and reach their full potential.

With an apprenticeship, effectively you’re doing a job, you’re getting paid well, you know that an apprenticeship will allow you to continue your development whilst in the world of work.

Niaill’s thoughts on his apprenticeship

I like the work-based aspect of apprenticeships. For me, I greatly benefitted from the apprenticeship with Paragon Skills, even with 25 years’ experience working with young people in care and education. I think it’s a reflective process. So I can look back on stuff that I did 20, 25 years ago, reflect on that and improve and grow with what I’ve learned now.

If you’re thinking about doing an apprenticeship, absolutely go for it. With an apprenticeship, you’re doing a job and getting paid while you improve your knowledge and skills to grow professionally and provide the best care you can for the children you support. It allows you to improve your development whilst in the working world.
