Nicola Warren

Leader in Adult Care apprentice, Black Swan Care Group

Nicola currently works as a trainee deputy, ahead of becoming the Deputy Manager for Black Swan care homes. Within the past 2 years, Nicola has completed the Level 2 Adult Care Worker and Level 3 Lead Adult Care Worker apprenticeships – both completing with a distinction, and has recently begun the Level 5 Leader in Adult Care apprenticeship.

Nicola’s journey within the care sector began at the age of 20 working in elderly care. As a care leaver with limited qualifications and a young family, she focused on being a mum while raising her children. After earning a psychology degree, specialising in mental health and autism, she returned to care work at Mid Meadows once her children started school. She progressed from carer to senior role, completed her level 2 diploma, and pursued the Level 3 apprenticeship, applying for Trainee Deputy.

Nicola is eager to pursue her Level 5 qualification with the upcoming deputy position, believing it will boost her chances for promotion. As a lifelong learner, she values personal development. Her manager praises her strong work ethic, teamwork, and dedication. Nicola often picks up extra shifts, takes on tasks, and leads by example. Passionate about learning, she’s willing to study in her spare time as long as the content is engaging.

The best part of an apprenticeship for me is the sense of achievement when I receive my grade and certificate. It’s rewarding to know that I’ve expanded my knowledge and skills, making me not only better at my job but also a better version of myself.

Nicola’s thoughts on her apprenticeship

Nicola believes apprenticeships are valuable for individuals, workplaces, and the country. They help people gain essential skills and qualifications while earning, which is especially important for those who cannot attend college or university. Employers benefit from more competent staff, and service users receive better care. On a national level, apprenticeships improve literacy, math skills, and knowledge of human rights, British law, and abuse response. Nicola views apprenticeships as a way to level the playing field for those less advantaged.

The most rewarding part for Nicola is the sense of achievement when she receives her grade and certificate, knowing that her growth enhances both her job performance and personal development. She values the support from her employer and training provider, especially her manager, who has mentored her and given her opportunities to practice her skills. Nicola aspires to progress to a home manager in the future.
