Sam is a Skills Tutor who has specialised in delivering health, social care and management apprenticeships for Paragon Skills on the South Coast for five years. She also teaches customer service and business administration courses.
In her experience as a Skills Tutor, she says it’s crucial that employers are updated regularly on learners’ progress. “Companies want to know what is going on – especially since the levy was introduced – they want to know that their money is being well spent.”
Being upfront and honest also pays dividends. “It’s easy to say initially to employers ‘don’t worry, everything will be fine’,” she says, “But we say ‘this is what will happen, be prepared’. We always follow through – Paragon Skills deliver what they say they’ll deliver and will adapt to meet the needs of the employer.”
And the key to her success? “As a Skills Tutor, you have to believe in your learners, especially if they lack confidence. You have to be optimistic and encourage them to believe in themselves – and if they do, they will succeed. When my learners get that final certificate, it’s such an achievement, particularly if they’ve doubted themselves. I tell them they can do it – and they do – then that’s an amazing feeling!”
