Functional Skills Reform – Supporting Your Apprentices’ Lifelong Learning Journey

The government has recently announced an immediate reform to the exit requirements for Functional Skills in adult apprenticeships (19+). As part of this change, the mandatory requirement to pass English and maths tests to successfully complete an apprenticeship has been removed.

At Paragon Skills, we understand that while these reforms may change the pathway to apprenticeship completion, the fundamental value of English and maths skills remains unchanged. These essential life skills not only support apprenticeship success but also empower individuals to thrive throughout their careers and in everyday life. That’s why we remain committed to delivering high-quality Functional Skills training, helping every apprentice develop the key skills they need for career growth, workplace success, and beyond—without the added pressure of an exit exam. Although Functional Skills will no longer be a barrier to completing an apprenticeship, we continue to support our learners in striving for success, empowering them with the tools they need to excel in their roles and throughout their careers.

Refocusing on Lifelong Skills for Success

While apprentices no longer need to pass a formal exam in English and maths to finish their apprenticeship, we continue to believe in the importance of these skills. Communication, numeracy, and problem-solving abilities are the foundation for success in any workplace. These competencies enable apprentices to engage effectively with colleagues, manage tasks, and adapt to new challenges as they progress in their roles and careers.

At Paragon Skills, we remain fully committed to helping our learners build strong foundations in Functional Skills. The removal of exit exam requirements doesn’t diminish the value we place on these essential skills, nor will it impact our dedication to providing high-quality, tailored training that prepares apprentices for long-term success.

Long-Term Impact of Strong English and Maths Skills

Even though the exit exam is no longer a requirement, the importance of these skills extends well beyond the apprenticeship itself. Strong English and maths abilities increase employability, boost confidence, and enable individuals to pursue further learning and career opportunities. Our mission remains focused on equipping apprentices with the necessary skills to excel in their current roles and grow as capable, adaptable employees.

We’re also excited to share that we’ve been nominated for the ATA Awards in recognition of our outstanding Functional Skills delivery. This nomination highlights our commitment to delivering high-quality, impactful training that makes a real difference in the lives of our learners.

Next Steps for Your Apprentices

Our tutors will be reaching out to apprentices to discuss the next steps in their development of English and maths skills, ensuring they continue to build confidence and competence in these essential areas. If you have any questions about how these changes may affect your apprentices or would like to learn more about how we’ll continue to support their development, please don’t hesitate to contact us at support@pgon.co.uk.
