What You Can Expect

On successful completion of your Heavy Vehicle Maintenance & Repair Advanced Level Apprenticeship you will hold a Level 3 Diploma in Heavy Vehicle Maintenance & Repair as well as Functional Skills in Maths and English.
To obtain the Level 3 Diploma in Heavy Vehicle Maintenance & Repair the skills you will require include:
- Excellent practical skills
- The ability to work quickly with attention to detail
- The ability to work without supervision
- Good communication skills
- The ability to follow written and verbal instructions
- A reasonable level of fitness and normal colour vision
The exact details of your job depend on your specific employer, but typically you can expect to work between 9am and 5pm, Monday to Friday – but these hours may differ depending on your chosen employer.
The duties of a Heavy Vehicle Service / Diagnostic technician may include:
- Servicing vehicles – carrying out checks and maintenance according to the manufacturers’ guidelines
- Diagnosing repairing and replacing faulty parts and components
- Advising the Service Receptionists about required repairs
- Producing time and cost estimates for vehicle repairs
- Completing safety inspections
- Carrying out MoT tests
- Maintaining repair and service records
You’ll also learn:
- Ordering new parts
- Maintaining records
- Warranty Procedures
- Health and safety in the workplace
