Who is the Apprenticeship for?

This Apprenticeship is ideal for employees working in classroom support roles in primary, secondary or special education settings.

These employees work closely with pupils and with teachers to ensure that they can provide academic, creative and technical support in the best way possible. They deliver curriculum-based activities to small groups and work with individuals to help them make progress in all areas of their learning and development.

Typical roles include: Teaching Assistant & Learning Support Assistant.

This Apprenticeship has been designed to maximise the added value that your employees deliver in your specific setting. They will develop skills to support you with planning, preparation and evaluation, and will be able to work with you to develop and promote strategies that really enhance the learning
provided to every individual.

Your pathway to success

Upon completion of your Level 2 Apprenticeship, you could progress to the Level 3 Supporting Teaching & Learning Apprenticeship. By now you will be fully qualified as a teaching assistant and continuing to learn through the next level Apprenticeship will improve your career prospects. 

The number of employees supporting teaching and learning in schools has risen steadily from 133,500 in 1997 to 338,000 in 2009; from 25% of the total school workforce to 43.37% over the same period.

Supporting teaching is very important and the supporting teaching and learning Apprenticeships have become increasingly popular since their introduction under the title of Teaching Assistant Apprenticeships in 2006. Since 2010, the take-up of supporting teaching and learning in schools is expected to continue to increase.
