Start your career with the Children & Young People's Workforce Intermediate Level 2 Apprenticeship

The Children & Young People's Workforce Intermediate Level 2 Apprenticeship offers a combination of qualifications that will equip you with the skills and knowledge required to work in the childcare industry and is ideal for your first role. You will learn how to provide effective care and contribute to the social development and practical skills of children and young people.

During your training, you will learn under the supervision of experienced childcare workers in a variety of settings which could include:

  • Early learning centre
  • Pre-school
  • Nursery or crèche
  • Social care setting with children aged 0-19 years*
  • Youth/community setting

 *For Apprentices aged 21+

Upon successful completion of your Children & Young People’s Workforce Intermediate Level 2 Apprenticeship, you will qualify with a level 2 Certificate for the Children & Young People's Workforce, in addition to Level 1 Functional Skills in Maths & English.

What you can expect from your Children & Young People’s Workforce Intermediate Level 2 Apprenticeship 

Your training will include a number of mandatory and optional units which are designed to enhance your skills and knowledge in line with the requirements for a role in this sector. Mandatory units include the following:

  • Introduction to personal development in health, social care or children’s and young people’s settings
  • Introduction to equality and inclusion in health, social care or children’s and young people’s settings
  • Child and young person development
  • Safeguarding the welfare of children and young people 
  • Maintain and support relationships with children and young people
  • Contribute to children and young people’s health and safety

In addition to the above mandatory units, you will need to achieve a specific number of credits from a choice of optional units which include supporting the creative needs of children and young people, promoting child and young person development, and supporting children and young people with disabilities and special educational needs.

During your Apprenticeship, you will be working and gaining practical experience from the start. The following skills and attributes will be of benefit to you in a childcare and young person workforce role:

 Working hours vary and are dependent on your employer and the type of organisation that you are employed by. Typically, these workplaces might be open from 7am to 6pm, including Saturdays in some instances.

Once you have successfully completed your Children and Young People’s Workforce Intermediate Level 2 Apprenticeship, you can progress onto the Early Years Educator Advanced Level 3 Apprenticeship or the Supporting Teach & Learning in Schools Advanced Level 3 Apprenticeship

Work opportunities for qualified childcare workers vary considerably and could include working in a playschool, as a childminder, in a school, in a hotel, on a cruise ship, or you can even start your own business.
