What you can expect
An Apprenticeship is a valuable doorway of opportunity for learners and employees to progress in their industry.
The hospitality industry, and in particularly front of house reception, covers hotels, bed and breakfasts, hospitality services, holiday resorts and self catering accommodation among others, and is part of the wider leisure, travel and tourism sector which needs to recruit 855,000 staff by the year 2017 to replace those who leave or retire.
A Front of House Intermediate Level Apprenticeship is an investment in the skills you need to succeed in the hospitality industry. These skills include:
- Good organisational skills
- Customer service and 'people' skills
- An understanding and tactful approach
- Willingness to learn new techniques and methods
The exact details of your job depend on your specific employer, but typically you can expect to work around 37 hours a week on a shift or rota system, including nights, bank holidays and particularly weekends, a busy time for the hospitality sector. As a front of house receptionist, your role could include any of the following:
- Greeting guests on arrival
- Dealing with reservations
- Preparing guest bills
- Managing the visitors book
- Providing useful information about the accommodation provided
You’ll also learn:
- To ensure guest information goes to housekeeping
- To liaise with management departments
Your pathway to success
Once your Apprenticeship is completed, you could progress onto a Hospitality Supervision Advanced Level Apprenticeship or employment as a Front of House Receptionist.
Front of house receptionists don’t just work in hotels. A career in hospitality could give you the opportunity to work in a variety of locations, including bed and breakfasts, youth/backpacker hostels, holiday resorts, ski resorts and self-catering accommodation among many more.
