Protected apprenticeship time
Unleashing the Power of Off-the-Job Learning
Off-the-job learning – also known as protected apprenticeship time – is a cornerstone of every apprenticeship. This dedicated time is designed to help you build the essential knowledge, skills, and behaviours you need to excel in your chosen field.
This isn’t just time away from your usual tasks; it’s a dedicated investment in your growth. It’s an opportunity to dive deeper, explore new concepts, and truly master your craft. You’re required to complete a set amount of off-the-job hours over your apprenticeship. Your Personal Tutor will guide you on the specific number of hours needed and support you every step of the way to achieve them.
Interactive digital modules & dynamic workshops
We’re committed to helping you maximise this valuable time. We provide a range of engaging resources, from interactive digital modules to dynamic workshops that offer practical, hands-on experience. We also champion consolidation activities, encouraging you to conduct your own research, practise new techniques, and solidify your understanding.
Employers are vital partners in this journey. By providing opportunities for training directly linked to your apprenticeship, they help bridge the gap between theory and practice. To support this, we’ve crafted a comprehensive learner journey that outlines the content of each module and suggests activities for exploration. Together, we can shape your future!
What Makes Off-the-Job Learning Count?
To ensure your off-the-job learning is effective and compliant, it should always meet these four key criteria:
- New Learning: You must be acquiring new knowledge, skills, or behaviours.
- Relevance: The learning must directly relate to the knowledge, skills, and behaviours outlined in your apprenticeship standard.
- Beyond Core Numeracy & Literacy: This time is for your apprenticeship-specific development, not for foundational maths or English.
- Integrated with Your Work: The learning should take place during your normal working hours, demonstrating a direct connection to your role and development.
