If you’re 19 or over, Functional Skills in English or maths might not be an exit requirement for your apprenticeship, but that doesn’t mean they’re not worth doing.
Many apprentices choose to opt in because these skills make a difference, not just to your learning now, but to your career in the long term.
Why it’s worth opting in
Functional Skills help you build confidence with everyday tasks and prepare for what comes next in your role. Whether you’re writing reports, handling medication, managing rotas or communicating with colleagues, strong English and maths can make your work easier, clearer, and more professional.
And beyond that, they support your progression.
Here’s what opting in can unlock:
- A nationally recognised Level 2 qualification (equivalent to GCSE grade 4/C)
- Access to higher-level apprenticeships (Level 3 or above)
- More opportunities for promotion, pay increases or leadership roles

- A stronger CV and more transferable skills for the future

Your Functional Skills Tutor will put together a bespoke plan based on your starting point and needs. You’ll have access to online learning, workshops, progress tracking, and dedicated tutor guidance to help you along the way.
