National Optimism Month – Create an optimistic workplace

This month is National Optimism Month, and at Paragon Skills we want to encourage everyone to take on an optimistic outlook, not just in the workplace, but in daily life as well. This is more than just always looking on the bright side but trying to understand how the people you interact with think and truly appreciating their point of view. We believe by doing so you’ll find more chances to reach your goals, whatever they may be.

In the workplace, it is important to have that reminder to look for the good, with discernment. We come in contact with people dealing with different things outside of work and within the office every day. Being able to take a step back and try to see someone else’s perspective goes a long way.

Optimism in the workplace

Although March is Optimism Month, any month can be an opportunity to build your tendency toward grounded optimism and reap the many benefits that come from this. Optimism is associated with many benefits in life, including increased health, happiness, and longevity. Developing thinking on these habits can be as important in the workplace as it is at home.

During the pandemic educators across the UK went online as a solution to the classroom restrictions brought on by the pandemic, many schools, colleges and training providers (ourselves included) are seeing the benefits of blended and online delivery, so are continuing to provide high-quality teaching and training at a distance which we believe is another great reason to be optimistic.

We know there have been fears that the pandemics legacy could have meant fewer positions or opportunities to progress. However, employers and employees have bounced back to the pre-pandemic level for both recruitment and training.  Choose optimism when talking to your teams about their training needs, know that they are most likely ready to take the needed steps to continue their career progression, and might just need a few words from you to start the ball rolling again.

Reward employees for a job well done

Always make sure to celebrate workplace victories, and this will help boost morale. A few simple ideas are: Reward success by giving your employees a small reward when they complete an important task or setting up an employee of the month award or peer to peer recognition awards.

We are all hard-wired, when we get a reward, special pathways in our brain become activated. Not only does this feel good, but the activation also leads us to seek out more rewarding stimuli meaning increased productivity and engagement all-round.

Exercise has many positive mood-enhancing results for both our bodies and our mental health. Setting up a wellbeing program at work that regularly rewards your employees for participating will not just help improve their physical health, but improve productivity levels.

Provide your teams with access to mentoring

Acting as a mentor in the workplace is a fantastic way to boost optimism. You will act as a guide for those who need it professionally and it helps nurture workplace relationships.
