Update on the Level 4 Lead Practitioner in Adult Care apprenticeship

It has been announced today that the Level 4 Lead Practitioner in Adult Care apprenticeship is among a number of apprenticeship standards that the government is planning to defund as part of wider reforms to the apprenticeship system in England. 

These proposed changes are part of a broader review of apprenticeship funding aimed at prioritising entry-level opportunities and increasing participation among younger learners. 

What we know so far 

The Minister has today announced that 16 apprenticeship standards are expected to be defunded, including several leadership and management programmes. Among these is the Level 4 Lead Practitioner in Adult Care apprenticeship, which is widely used across the care sector to support experienced staff progressing into senior practitioner and junior management roles. 

At this stage, full details have not yet been confirmed. This includes: 

• The exact timeline for when funding may end but they have confirmed that defunding will not take effect before 1 September 2026 at the earliest 
• Whether alternative programmes will replace the affected standards
