World Suicide Prevention Day 2024: Creating hope through action

Every year on September 10th, the world comes together to observe World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD). This day is dedicated to raising awareness about suicide prevention, reducing the stigma surrounding mental health, and promoting actions that can save lives. In 2024, the theme is “Creating Hope Through Action”, emphasising the power of collective efforts in fostering hope and resilience.

Understanding the importance

Suicide is a global public health issue, affecting individuals, families, and communities. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), nearly 800,000 people die by suicide every year, which is one person every 40 seconds. These statistics highlight the urgent need for effective prevention strategies and support systems.

The role of community

Communities play a crucial role in suicide prevention. By fostering a supportive environment, we can encourage individuals to seek help and share their struggles. Simple actions like checking in on a friend, offering a listening ear, or sharing mental health resources can make a significant difference.

How you can help

  1. Educate yourself and others: Learn about the signs of suicidal behaviour and how to respond. Share this knowledge with your community to create a network of informed individuals.
  1. Promote mental health resources: Ensure that people know where to find help. This can include hotlines, counselling services, and online resources.
  1. Be there: Sometimes, just being present and showing that you care can provide the support someone needs to keep going.
  1. Advocate for change: Support policies and initiatives that promote mental health and suicide prevention at local, national, and global levels.

Prioritising mental health at Paragon Skills

At Paragon Skills, we place a strong emphasis on the mental health of our learners and colleagues. As recipients of the Gold Leaders in Safeguarding award, our programmes are designed to include self-study and guided reflection, promoting wellbeing and resilience. However, we recognise that there are times when direct support or intervention is essential.

That’s why we’ve partnered with Shout, a crisis text messaging service that provides 24/7 support. By texting ‘Pgon’ to 85258, you can connect with a trained crisis volunteer who will engage with you at your own pace. Through thoughtful questions, active listening, and empathetic responses, they will help guide you to a calm and safe space. If further assistance is needed, they can also refer you to additional services for ongoing support.

World Suicide Prevention Day is a reminder that we all have a role to play in preventing suicide. By taking action, we can create a world where hope and support are available to everyone. Let’s come together to make a difference, one step at a time.

If you or someone you know is struggling, please reach out for help. There is always hope, and there are people who care.
